For many small businesses, intellectual property (IP) protects more than just your business idea – it protects the potential sustainability of your business. IP includes various areas of your business from your logos, products/services to even the way you automate certain processes your business offers.

In this seminar, it will provide you with a break down of what entrepreneurs and small business owners need to know about patents, copyrights, domain names, and trademarks and how to avoid legal troubles before they happen. Topics include:

    • How trademarks, copyrights, patents, domain names, and business name registrations all differ.
    • Why it is important for any new business to select a trademark that will be both federally registrable and legally protectable, highlighting factors critical when choosing a mark.
    • The importance of doing a complete search and whether an attorney should be used.
    • What may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights in a mark and issues a “cease-and-desist” letter.
    • Information on what the USPTO does in the federal registration process and how to avoid “scams” perpetrated by companies that request fees for services not required by the USPTO.

    Biographical information:

Jason Lott works within the Office of the Commissioner for Trademarks in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Alexandria, Virginia.  Currently, he is the Attorney Advisor for Trademark Educational Outreach, assisting the effort for increased USPTO educational activities in the area of trademark fundamentals. For four years prior, he spearheaded the Pro Se Video Work Project, tasked with creating multimedia-based trademark educational materials.  Mr. Lott has been with the USPTO since 2000, previously serving as a Law Office Examining Attorney.

Beginning in 1993, Aerojet Rocketdyne has offered a seminar in Canoga Park, targeted at employees, customers, and suppliers , at all levels, with a focus on revisiting the foundations of teamwork, the connecting force of all organizations. A reliance on working together is fundamental to both solving problems and preventing problems, and the abilities to “do more with less,” in all organizations, whether public or private, for-profit or non-profit. This seminar reveals blind spots to team work that are deeply embedded in how we think. The upcoming offering through ETI is part of a 16-year outreach effort that has welcomed over 1,000+ community leaders to Aerojet Rocketdyne.

Seminar Objective:  The objective of this 9-hour seminar is to explore the potential of “better thinking about our thinking,” with a very practical focus on how we work and learn together.

Who should attend?  Anyone who is concerned about improving the effectiveness of individuals and organizations will gain from this workshop and leave with new and deeper knowledge, and new connections to others. Past participants include individual contributors, senior managers, designers, students, human resource professionals, purchasing agents, accountants, health care professionals, civic leaders, university deans, professors, and others.

Seminar Leader – Dr. Bill Bellows is an Associate Fellow in the InThinking Network at Aerojet Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, CA, where he is known for integrating the thinking of W. Edwards Deming into Genichi Taguchi’s design system. One of the first decisions that you will have to make as a business owner is how the company should be structured. This decision will have long-term implications, so consult with an accountant and attorney to help you select the form of ownership that is right for you. In making a choice, you will want to take into account the following: Your vision regarding the size and nature of your business. Number of employees. Type of business operation. Legal restrictions. The level of control you wish to have. The level of “structure” you are willing to deal with. The business’s vulnerability to lawsuits. Tax implications of the different ownership structures. Expected profit (or loss) of the business and capital needs. Whether or not you need to re-invest earnings into the business. Length of business operation. This session will educate you on the permit process and review how to apply for the permits needed to operate a business. Business licensing requirements will be reviewed along with a brief discussion on the implications of legal structure. The workshop is led by a business attorney so please be prepared with your questions.
