Performance Measurements are used to answer specific business questions. Financial managers and company owners want to keep overhead and sales aligned properly and monitor overall company profitability. Sales managers want to know which customers / products / services are profitable. Those who manage operations want to monitor changes in production cost.

Company owners typically measure sales volumes, as most managers understand the importance of monitoring revenue. However, measuring sales numbers is not enough. Other business decisions, such as decreasing profit margins or increasing cost, can cause cash flow problems. Neither of which can be detected by simply monitoring sales volumes. For this reason, it is important to have Performance Measurements that also follow profitability trends.
