Recipe for Success: Building a Better Community, One Bagel at a Time

11132 Del Amo Blvd, Lakewood, CA 90715

Joe Ung, owner of Cassidy’s Corner Café in Lakewood, CA, has been a client of the Small Business Development Center hosted by Long Beach City College since 2015. Cassidy’s Corner does not just offer delicious bagels and coffee – it is considered the local hangout where everyone is welcome.

Challenges

When Joe first came to the SBDC, he needed assistance negotiating a new lease. He was thrilled with the service and expertise he received when saying, “the SBDC taught me that I have leverage when I am talking with a property manager about a lease. My advisor helped me negotiate the price, terms and tenant improvements.”

Solutions and Results

Joe has worked with SBDC business experts in the areas of loan packaging and capital assistance, food costs, operations, and infrastructure needs. Cassidy’s Corner, which currently employs six full-time and two part-time employees, will expand into three new locations in 2019. Joe’s philosophy of community over competition has helped build a better community, one bagel at a time.

“The SBDC gave me an understanding of the kinds of resources that are out there for small business owners. I am very grateful for all their help.”
